IT Infrastructure Consolidation as a Signal for Growth, Enabler of Resiliency and Performance, and Improved ROI

Hammer Tech, which helps clients with a broad range of technology enablement services to clients across the globe, has always pursued a bi-coastal data center strategy. This includes multiple data centers in Pennsylvania, and one located in Mesa, Arizona.

What changed?

These data centers have seen large increases in application growth and network activity as a result of our customer-driven organic growth in recent years. We decided that the best way forward was not to expand the number of data centers, but rather to consolidate the Pennsylvania production data centers into a single data center with greater capacity. Managing a single production data center in the region would reduce expense, enable our infrastructure team to focus more on customer requirements and less on data center operations and maintenance, and ensure that all customers platforms resided on the higher-quality infrastructure choice.

Once the strategy of consolidation was settled upon, we determined that the best way to execute this strategy was to expand our relationship with the data center provider that delivered the greater resiliency and performance. As a result, we transitioned our infrastructure housed at another Philadelphia-area data center and expanded our already large footprint at the Direct LTx data center in Reading, Pennsylvania. This data center is highly resilient, located 84 feet above the 500-year flood plain, is serviced by over a dozen carriers, and features an unsurpassed uptime record.

 How did it go?

The results have been as expected, improving overall reliability, security, and scalability to meet and exceed the business requirements of our customers. The IT infrastructure is conveniently deployed 51 miles west of center city Philadelphia and within a two-hour drive of several mid-Atlantic metropolitan areas. Costs have been reduced, employees have more freedom for innovation, and customers are pleased with security, performance, and network availability.
